Just when you think Nicolas Cage has starred in every type of movie imaginable, the Academy Award-winning actor has once again pulled a new trick out of his bag as his new horror film Longlegs is being hailed as a horror masterpiece.

The film, which releases in theaters on July 12, currently has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has featured some of the best movie marketing in recent memory, with some film fans even comparing the strategy to that of the iconic late 90s found-footage horror film The Blair Witch Project.

The reviews that have hit social media have been even more eye-opening than the ones from official publications, with people comparing it iconic Oscar-winning films and sharing anecdotes of people having such a visceral reaction that they began to cry.

One review said it’s the best serial killer horror film since Silence of the Lambs, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Longlegs is the best serial killer horror film since The Silence of the Lambs. Oz Perkins infuses dread/terror into every single frame. Utterly terrifying and unsettling, Maika Monroe is hypnotic, while Nicolas Cage will haunt your nightmares. Best of 2024 so far,” one movie fan posted.

One of the craziest reactions is from a reviewer who says a woman in his audience began crying, while another says they spent their screening in an “intense [state of] panic.”

“Every Longlegs review be like ‘This film felt as if it was crafted by SATAN himself. I felt the presence of EVIL in each frame and it shook me to the absolute depths of my soul. Actually had to say a prayer and make the sign of the cross during the third act. THEN I THREW UP!’” another Twitter user joked.

“Saw Longlegs this morning and now I’m just supposed to… carry on with my day? It’s like Osgood Perkins saw Silence of the Lambs and thought, ‘Nah, not fucked up enough for me,’” said one viral review of the film.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise, but American pop culture icon Nic Cage is also earing rave reviews for his performance.

You think you’ve seen Nic Cage do it all and then you see Longlegs and discover there is truly no place he won’t go. He’s remarkably unsettling (and funny) in the film, which takes a fairly standard serial killer story and cranks the atmosphere of dread up to 11.”

Alongside Cage as the titular and terrifying serial killer, Longlegs, directed by Oz Perkins, stars Maika Monroe in the lead role, in addition to Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, Kiernan Shipka, and Dakota Daulby.
