Luke Hemmings of 5 Seconds of Summer joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his new solo single, “Shakes.” Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

The singer talks about the song coming from a place of late-20s loneliness, which led him to artists like Damon Albarn and other existentially-tinged songwriters for inspiration. “‘Shakes’ was written in New York, so I was listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem, and even ’90s stuff like Cocteau Twins and The Verve, stuff like that,” he says. “Knowing what I started trying to get into — which was that melancholy, lonely, but surrounded by people [vibe] — that’s like the most New York thing ever.”

As one might expect, this tone also comes as a result of working alone. Unlike 5 Seconds of Summer, where the singer can look to his bandmates for assistance, Hemmings’ solo work sees him writing songs all on his own. It’s lead to a change in his writing, which can be seen in the diverse influences on this recent single.

5SOS fans fear not, though, as the group is planning to reconvene later in the year to start working on the next project.
