Despite what a few billionaires pandering to the common denominator desperately desire, the world only gets more complex, and that includes horror movies. It used to be enough to watch some zombies shamble around or horny teens get hacked to improbable pieces, but nowadays, your monster has to be a metaphor for grief or shame or something. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. If anything, it’s made the public take the genre more seriously.
