Each week, Consequence rings in New Music Friday by highlighting new albums to stream. With just a short stretch of days before we’re fully back in autumn mode, today’s slate of great releases might very well be the soundtrack for the next season.
There are some bold statement pieces from artists on the rise, like Dora Jar and julie, as well as some new offerings from established favorites, like a new live album from The War on Drugs and The Jesus Lizard’s comeback LP Rack. Meanwhile, singer and songwriter Nilüfer Yanya returns today with another indelible record, My Method Actor.

Dora Jar – No Way to Relax When You’re on Fire
The Los Angeles singer-songwriter has risen quickly through the ranks of the pop machine, but she’s done so with an unshakeable authenticity. Dora Jar can be weirdly charming and charmingly weird; her sonic choices range from saturated hyperpop to earthy folk, all tied together by her enchanting vocals. With her debut finally out, Dora Jar’s multi-faceted artistry in on high display.

Foxing – Foxing
The St. Louis emo rockers return with their fifth full-length album, a self-titled effort that is described as balancing “hopefulness and nihilism.” Released via the band’s own Grand Paradise label, the LP arrives ahead of an expansive fall 2024 US tour (get tickets here).

The Jesus Lizard – Rack
Underground noise rock legends are back with their first new album in 26 years, Rack. Picking up where they left off, the band looks to recapture the controlled chaos and pointed aggression of their acclaimed ’90s work. julie – my anti-aircraft friend
julie, one of Consequence’s artists to watch in 2024, look to make their mark with the release of their debut full-length album, my anti-aircraft friend. Dialing in on the band’s brand of noisy, shadowy, dynamic shoegaze, the record aims to capitalize off of the success of previous releases like “flutter” and the pushing daisies EP.

keshi – Requiem
It’s been over two years since the R&B artist released a new full-length album, and Requiem is exactly the return to form longtime listeners have been craving. With his distinct falsetto and ability to match personal details with universal sentiments, keshi continues to push beyond the homegrown sound that pushed him from his Soundcloud origins into star territory. Lunar Vacation – Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire
The Georgia band grew up as childhood mates, and that camaraderie is deeply evident on their sophomore album Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire. Their dreamy sound is a little rougher around the edges this time around, with the band vowing to keep it raw and “embrace mistakes” — still, even with a more organic presentation, they come across like they’ve been playing together their whole lives.

Miranda Lambert – Postcards from Texas
For her tenth studio album, the country star decided to go home. Described as a love letter to the state in which she was raised, Postcards from Texas boasts all-star writing credits from major players like Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally. With everything from armadillos to The Alamo accounted for, Lambert’s tour of Texas has arrived.

Nilüfer Yanya – My Method Actor
After a string of dreamy singles, Yanya’s sophomore LP, My Method Actor, has arrived in full. The singer-songwriter has a knack for crafting music in a way that feels entrancing, and these 11 tracks coalesce into a thoroughly dreamy project that touches on heartbreak, intimacy, taking risks, and the balance of creative life. Tony Levin – Bringing It Down to the Bass
Legendary bassist Tony Levin has played for a lot of great musicians: King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, and Stevie Nicks, to name a few. But now, he’s back with another solo record, his first since 2019. It’s got everything you need to know right there in the title — even with plenty of sonic detours and guest spots from Mike Portnoy and Robert Fripp, Levin is always bringing it right back down to his intuitive work on the bass guitar.

The War on Drugs – Live Drugs Again
The Philadelphia rockers have been at this for nearly 20 years now, and their new live album Live Drugs Again — the second live album in four years from the group — is a testament to that growth and transformation. The band finds a myriad of ways to expand and contract like a living being while playing their extended jams, and luckily, they’re bringing that terrific live show this month back on the road with The National (get tickets here).
