The Brat Pack — the famed ’80s crew of actors who appeared in a slew of popular films together — is getting a new documentary.
Produced by ABC News Studios, Brats is a feature-length documentary written and directed by Brat Pack member Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, Weekend at Bernie’s). The doc will track the Brat Pack’s origins, history, and impact from the early ’80s to today, and detail the experiences of actors and filmmakers working on The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, and more.
In addition to McCarthy, several Brat Pack members will make an appearance in the documentary, including Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton, and Lea Thompson. Also set to appear are the principal writers, directors, and production staff from the era (sans longtime director John Hughes, who passed away in 2009).
“The Brat Pack has cast a long shadow over my life and career,” McCarthy said in a statement. “After all these years, I was curious to see how it had affected my fellow Brat Pack members. What I found was surprising — and liberating.” The documentary follows McCarthy’s 2021 memoir that revolved heavily around his Brat Pack experience, titled Brat: An ’80s Story.
Last year, Sheedy told podcast host Kyle Meredith that she’d be a part of McCarthy’s documentary, saying that while she was initially hesitant, she agreed once she heard Emilio Estevez was participating.
Brats is a co-production between ABC News Studios, Neon, and Network Entertainment, and will land on Hulu later this year.
Meanwhile, a St. Elmo’s Fire TV revival was underway in 2019, but NBC confirmed last year that the project was no longer in development.
