Back in early March, we brought you the story of actor Sam Elliott — who can most recently be seen starring in Paramount+’s Yellowstone prequel 1883 — making an appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast where he bemoaned the “allusions to homosexuality” in the “piece of shit” movie The Power of the Dog.
Fast forward about two weeks and Elliott has added another piece of Western pop culture to his shit list: Yellowstone. It’s certainly an interesting position for Elliott to take, considering the fact that he, well, cuts a check from the Yellowstone universe. Whatever happened to artistic integrity?
“I’m not a Yellowstone fan. I don’t watch Yellowstone,” Elliott said on that same episode of WTF. “I love [Kevin] Costner. There’s a lot of good people on the cast, a few of them I’ve worked with before — nothing against any of them — but it’s just too much like fucking Dallas or something for me.”
In case you missed Elliott’s previous headline-making comments, the 77-year-old acting veteran slammed The Power of the Dog‘s homosexual themes and called the film, which is currently the odds-on favorite to win Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards, a “piece of shit.”
“You want to talk about that piece of shit?” Elliot said to Maron when asked about The Power of the Dog. “That’s what all these fucking cowboys in that movie looked like. They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts, there’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the fucking movie.”
Responding to Elliott’s comments, Campion — the 67-year-old New Zealand director of The Power of the Dog — said he was being a “little bitch.”
“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. He’s not a cowboy; he’s an actor. The West is a mythic space and there’s a lot of room on the range. I think it’s a little bit sexist,” Campion told Variety.
In addition to a Best Picture nomination, The Power of the Dog — which is currently streaming on Netflix — racked up noms for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (x2), Best Supporting Actress, Best Apadted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.
