Film is a visual medium, so for the most part, the music isn’t that important. It’s nice to have, otherwise characters would just be sitting in silence occasionally broken by withering barbs like one of those “Big Bang Theory without the laugh track” videos, but you can sub in just about any iteration of yakkity sax over some wacky hijinks or melancholic strings to score a tragedy and the end result will be roughly the same.
Sometimes, though, the music is woven so deeply into the fabric of the story that it just wouldn’t be the same without it. For user Federico_95, that’s true for Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. “Personally, the Brian Eno songs in most scenes (of the movie) just killed me,” they told r/AskReddit.
Apparently killed her, too. That or the leukemia. Oh, relax, she’s not real.
They then asked, “Which movies benefited enormously from their soundtrack?” and lots of beautiful music followed.
