A woman’s trip to an ancient port city in Sicily, Italy, ended on a particularly sour note. She says that Delta Air Lines inexplicably canceled her flights and has since refused to compensate her for the expenses she incurred.
Now Carmen Sansone (@csansone4) has taken her story to the internet as a last resort to recover the $1,600 she says Delta owes her.
She was checking her bag at the airport in Catania, Sicily, when the ordeal began.
“The Delta agent just casually says, ‘I have bad news. Your flight’s canceled,’” Sansone says in her TikTok. “No refund. Nothing. Just me stranded in the middle of a foreign country airport no one speaks English at.”
They rebooked her on a flight the next morning, so Sansone says she paid $205 for a taxi to a hotel about an hour away. There, she says she ate lunch and dinner but didn’t incur any “crazy expenses.”
Early the next morning, she says she took another roughly $200 taxi back to the airport.
Then her flight sat on the tarmac for two hours, according to Sansone.
This made her miss her connecting flight from John F. Kennedy Jr. International Airport to Nashville, Tennessee, she continues.
Her travel woes were far from finished, however.
No Escape From New York
When she got to New York City, Sansone says she paid $60 for a lounge pass to wait the five hours for her flight to Nashville.
A smooth trip home was not to be. She says she was sitting there “sipping wine” when she got an email from Delta.
“My flight to Nashville was canceled. No reasoning, nothing. Just canceled,” she says.
“At this point I’m balling, crying, going on 24 hours of being awake, exhausted, feeling helpless, feeling like Delta’s giving me nothing,” Sansone continues. “I’m spending all this money out of pocket.”
Delta booked her on yet another flight leaving the next day. So Sansone once again took a taxi to a hotel for the night, she says.
“I order dinner. Then I had to order clothes off of Instacart,” she says. Delta still had her bags, she notes, and the clothes were from Target, so “not expensive.”
Finally, after an Uber ride to the airport in the morning, Sansone boarded a flight to Nashville at long last.
No Refund, Big Problem
Once home, Sansone says she gathered her receipts and submitted them all to Delta for compensation.
“They denied every single expense besides the one taxi that I took. One taxi,” she says incredulously. “Delta currently owes me $1,073.39.”
Then she recalls that the European Union requires airlines to pay additional compensation to travelers whose flights are canceled.
“Also around another $600 for the EU compensation,” she says. “That’s like a law for the flight they canceled on me in Catania. That’s actually a law, Delta, so you must pay me that.”
So, she says Delta owes her roughly $1,600.
Now Sansone is at her wits’ end trying to get compensated.
“Hopefully this helps out my case. I’m not really sure what else to do,” she concludes. “So Delta, if it’s easier, I can just send you my Venmo. Thank you. Bye.”
Delta did not immediately respond to BroBible’s inquiry sent via the contact form on its website Wednesday morning.
Take It To LinkedIn?
Sansone’s TikTok has nearly 165,000 views and over 900 comments as of this writing.
Many of the commenters offered suggestions for how she can get her $1,600 from Delta.
Several specifically suggested taking the matter to LinkedIn.
“Tag them on LinkedIn. They don’t like that at all,” wrote one. Sansone replied, “On it.”
Others suggested filing complaints with the Federal Aviation Authority, the Department of Transportation, and/or the Better Business Bureau (BBB). One person shared that complaining to the BBB ultimately resulted in a different airline issuing them a full refund.
Another suggestion was to take the matter to her credit card company.
“Just dispute the Delta flight ticket, probably worth $1k plus,” one person wrote. “Say you didn’t get what you paid for, which you didn’t, they cancelled the flight.”
Sansone responded that she was doing this “as we speak.”
“Delta’s gonna be hearing from me everywhere,” she said.
