Following the success of Thunderbolts*director Jake Schreier is being eyed to helm Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated X-Men film. Thunderbolts*, a ragtag team-up film that’s earned Marvel some of its best reviews and reaction from fans in years.

The X-Men script is being penned by Michael Leslie, whose previous credits include Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t.

Prior to directing Thunderbolts*, Schreier had previously helmed Robot & Frank, Paper Towns, and the Netflix series Beef.

“Sources confirm that Schreier, whose movie garnered some of the best reviews for Marvel in quite a few years, is engaged in early talks in for the gig.”

The X-Men has begun to be sprinkled into the MCU in recent years, although they have largely been previous versions of the characters, such as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Kelsey Grammar’s Beast (The Marvels).

The idea of Mutants have also been introduced into the MCU, via characters such as Namor and Ms. Marvel.

In Avengers: Doomsday, various Fox-era X-Men actors are set to return, including Grammar, Stewart, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops (and potentially more).

With all that said, it’s unclear if ANY of those characters will feature in X-Men, which Feige reportedly has a “ten year plan” for following the conclusion of the upcoming Avengers movies, Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

Given that information, it’s likely that Schreier’s X-Men will introduce a largely new cast of characters as the team leads Marvel into a new era.
