THE NEW Golden Bachelor Mel Owens has been spotted out and about near his Orange County, California home, in the first photos since the announcement he will star on the second season of the ABC senior dating show.

The retired NFL star-turned-lawyer, 66, wore a gray zip-up and sweatpants as he stopped by a Rite-Aid in his neighborhood on Thursday, April 24.

Mel will take the reigns from Gerry Turner, the first Golden Bachelor, who divorced his final rose recipient, Theresa Nist, just three months after their 2024 live TV wedding.

The athlete is the father of two sons, Lucas, 20, and Andre, 18.

“I had a chance to visit with him and his kids yesterday, and it’s really a unique and special bond to watch,” Bachelor host Jesse Palmer told Us Weekly.

“I think he’s in this unique time now where he can finally focus a little bit more on it himself.

“His kids are getting ready to go off to college, and I think he really wants to find a special person.”

PAINFUL SPLIT

Mel divorced his wife of nearly 18 years, Fabiana Owens, in 2020, Us reported.

“While life took an unexpected turn with the passing of his father and the end of his marriage, Owens channeled his energy into being the best father he could be, focusing on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams,” the Golden Bachelor press release claimed.

“Now, after several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship, sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple.

“As the Golden Bachelor, he’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.”

NFL STAR

Mel rose to fame after he was picked ninth in the 1981 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams.

The 6 foot, 2 inch athlete played for the team until 1989.

“I played with a lot of great players, I had a great time,” he said in a 2024 interview, reflecting on his football career.

“We built the NFL to where it is now. It was just before the TV contracts got big in the early 90s.”

After his retirement from the spot, he got his law degree, and now primarily helps those suffering from sports-related injuries.

Mel’s stint on the show comes after first Golden Bachelorette star Joan Vassos picked Chock Chapple during her 2024 season.

Unlike Gerry and Theresa, Joan and Chock are still happily engaged.

However, they won’t be getting married anytime soon, Chock recently admitted.

“Her son’s getting married in the summer, and then another son is probably going to get engaged, so we’re like, ‘Let’s just put a wedding on hold for now,” he told Parade.

“She’s like, ‘I don’t want to compete with my son’s wedding and a lot going on.’”
