Two-time Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon has been cast as Bill Parcells in an upcoming film. Shannon will star as the legendary NFL head coach in the Skydance Sports project Mr. Irrelevant, which will tell the story of former NFL running back John Tuggle, who was taken with the last pick in the 1983 NFL Draft.
Michael Shannon is one of the most notoriously intense actors in Hollywood, known for her work in projects such as 8 Mile, Bad Boys II, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Take Shelter, Mud, The Iceman, Man of Steel, The Night Before, Loving, The Shape of Water, Knives Out, Bullet Train, and more.
For his performances in Revolutionary Road and Noctural Animals, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. In recent years, Shannon has taken on increasing TV roles, starring in series such as Nine Perfect Strangers, George & Tammy, and Waco: The Aftermath.
In addition to Shannon as Bill Parcells, Mr. Irrelevant — written by Nick Santora and directed by Jonathan Levine — Superman star David Corenswet is set to play John Tuggle.
“It will tell the inspiring and heartfelt true story of Tuggle, drafted by the New York Giants, and his enduring impact on his team and teammates. Parcells was the Hall of Fame coach of the Giants at this time. He’s considered one of the greatest coaches of his era, winning two Super Bowls with the Giants, but also played a large part in the team taking a chance on Tuggle.” [via Deadline]
Tuggle’s story is a tragic one, as he was diagnosed with cancer just a year after being drafted before passing away in 1986 at the age of 25 years old. During his lone season in the NFL, Tuggle had 17 carries for 49 yards and a toucdown, in addition to 50 receving yards and 156 return yards on special teams.
