Marvel went live across social media platforms for a teasingly slow, hours-long reveal of the Avengers: Doomsday cast. We already knew Robert Downey Jr. would be back with a new metal suit (and massive payday) as the iconic villain Doctor Doom, and now we know who else will assemble for the ensemble.
In the most surprising reveals in a sea of expected names, multiple X-Men actors were named. That includes Ian McKellen, whose Magneto will be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier, a variant of whom we saw meet a vicious end in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Alan Cumming will teleport in as Nightcrawler (the character he played just once, in 2002’s X2), while Kelsey Grammer will return as The Beast, Rebecca Romijn is back as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Grammer previously joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the post-credits stinger in The Marvels, hinting at a new alternate universe for the MCU’s X-Men.
Another MCU X-actor, Channing Tatum, has also been revealed, likely to rescue his Deadpool & Wolverine portrayal of Gambit from the Void.

Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor, setting up multiversal tension with Downey Jr.’s variant version of his former teammate. His trickster half-brother Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki (which could be interesting, given the way Season 2 of the Disney+ show ended). Other returning Avengers veterans include Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and Sebastian Stan (Bucky/Winter Soldier).
Stan nexts appears in Thunderbolts* alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and Wyatt Russel’s U.S. Agent as they square off against Lewis Pullman’s Sentry, all of whom will also suit up in Doomsday. Meanwhile, Mackie’s Captain America: Brave New World co-star Danny Ramirez is reprising his role as the new Falcon.
Letitia Wright returns, presumably as Black Panther, with Wakanda Forever adversary Tenoch Huerta Mejia also reprising his role as Atlantean mutant Namor, along with series standout Winston Duke as M’Baku. Additionally, Simu Liu will make his long-awaited comeback as Shang-Chi, his first confirmed live-action appearance since 2021’s Legend of the Ten Rings.
MCU newcomers set to debut in Fantastic Four: First Steps — Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bacrach (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) — will also appear, which makes sense considering the team’s deep ties to Doctor Doom.
Avengers: Doomsday was announced last summer after Marvel scrapped its original Avengers 5 plans. Initially subtitled The Kang Dynasty, the movie was retooled after the studio decided to move on from the Kang character following actor Jonathan Majors’ assault conviction. Instead, Marvel pivoted back to Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and reworked the movie as Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production, with a release date set for May 1st, 2026. The plan is to follow it with the direct sequel Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7th, 2027. Leading up to those all-hands team-ups, Thunderbolts* arrives in theaters on May 2nd of this year, while Disney+ will premiere new series Ironheart on June 24th and Wonder Man in December. Also expected in 2026 are Season 2 of the newly debuted Daredevil: Born Again, the WandaVision spinoff VisionQuest, and a Destin Daniel Cretton-directed follow-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home, due out July 31st.
