Las Vegas is not dying! At least not this weekend. Thousands upon thousands of sports fanatics and gamblers descended upon the Entertainment Capital of the World to watch March Madness and to experience the first weekend of Dead & Co.’s return to The Sphere.

Hotel rooms are either completely booked or will cost you a small fortune. Sportsbooks are packed!

Even though online sports betting is legal in 38 of 50 United States and the District of Columbia, Las Vegas continues to be the most sought-after destination in the world for gamblers. Placing a bet on an app is one thing. It’s fun. Holding a physical ticket as you sweat out a spread alongside a bunch of people you either don’t know at all or just met is a different kind of rush.

The viewing experience is on another level.

To go even one step further, the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is non-stop action from Thursday to Sunday night. Sportsbooks provide a singular place to watch all of the games at the same time on a big screen with plenty of food, drink and entertainment nearby. You get the idea.

Circa was already slammed before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning!

If basketball was not enough reason to flock to Nevada this weekend, Dead and Company makes its return to The Sphere. They will play shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

As a result of these events, and the desire for Northerners to get out of the cold, Las Vegas is as busy as ever. The crowds present a stark contrast to Super Bowl weekend at the beginning of last month. There is an ongoing narrative that Vegas is dying because casinos and other vendors are nickel and diming visitors to a tipping point. People would rather vacation elsewhere because it is too expensive.

That is absolutely true to some extent. However, hotel rooms this weekend do not reflect the downward trend. Let’s compare the price per night for Saturday and Sunday nights!

  • Caesars Palace—
    • Super Bowl: $40
    • This weekend: $561
  • MGM Grand—
    • Super Bowl: $68
    • This weekend: $348
  • Paris—
    • Super Bowl: $35
    • This weekend: $146
  • Luxor—
    • Super Bowl: $19
    • This weekend: SOLD OUT (seriously)
  • Harrah’s—
    • Super Bowl: $16
    • This weekend: $55
  • Bellagio—
    • Super Bowl: $194
    • This weekend: $294

The list goes on. You can say that Las Vegas is dying and you might be right. I do think the city as a whole will have to come back down to earth in terms of pricing if it wants to stay busy. Just not this weekend! March Madness and Dead & Co. is keeping Las Vegas alive… for now.
