Ooh, wah-ah-ah-ah shit! A pyrotechnics display during a show headlined by Disturbed at their hometown of Chicago’s United Center on Saturday (March 8th) caused significant damage to the Chicago Bulls’ championship banners that were hanging from the rafters.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the heat from the pyro warped the bottom halves of the Bulls’ six NBA championship banners from the 1990s. As a result, the banners have been removed from the arena for repairs, and will not be on display for the remainder of the NBA season.
The Bulls won those championships during their dynastic run led by the iconic Michael Jordan, considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time.
The arena issued a statement, reading, “United Center is currently working with the Bulls to explore options to repair these banners. While the banners will not be in place for the remainder of this season, we do anticipate them being back in place next season.”
The concert also featured support from Three Days Grace and Sevendust, and it is unclear during which set the damage happened, although Disturbed’s shows are known to have lots of pyro (see footage from the Chicago gig below).
The shame of it is that Disturbed themselves are big Chicago sports fans, as drummer Mike Wengren performed in both a Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks jersey during the concert.
Disturbed are touring in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their multiplatinum album The Sickness. The North American outing runs through a May 17th show in Las Vegas, with tickets available here.
