Foggy Nelson Dies!
In the series premiere, Matt Murdock (Cox), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) go out to Josie’s Bar to celebrate the success of their law practice.
Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), aka Bullseye, returns for revenge, while one of Foggy’s clients calls to apologize for selling him out to Bullseye.
Dex then aimed at Foggy through a sniper rifle as he exited the bar, shooting him in the chest and nearly taking out Karen.
Matt and Bullseye have a fight scene through the bar and make their way to the roof, where Matt uses his super-senses to listen to Foggy’s heartbeat, which is fading as he dies.
“It’s really hard — it’s sad,” Charlie shared with Variety about filming the scene. “The good news is that it’s got to be iconic. We’re back with a new show, so you’ve got to be big, brave and bold. You’ve got to do something different and shake things up. So, likely, there has to be a casualty, and sadly it is Foggy. It’s devastating on a personal level and for the characters. I always think about Foggy Nelson as being kind of the heartbeat of the MCU. We lose a lot.”
Elden Henson was not originally supposed to return and his character’s death was going to happen off screen. However, showrunner Dario Scardapane shared the shocking death had to take place on screen.
“If something this earth-shattering is going to happen, we have to feel it,” he said. “This is more than an inciting incident. This is an earthquake. This has ripple effects through the entire story.”
After the death, the show then jumps forward one year, and Matt and Karen have lost touch, still mourning the loss of their friend.
While Foggy was killed in the series premiere, Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum has confirmed that Elden will be back for season two. In what capacity, he remained mum, but did mention that there is no Matt Murdoch story without Karen and Foggy…
