Hololive’s Yagoo explains why AI streamers won’t replace VTubers

Hololive CEO Motoaki Tango – otherwise known as Yagoo – has downplayed the idea that AI Vtubers and streamers could replace actual VTubers.

Over the last few years, VTubing has become a phenomenon that plenty of streamers have jumped on board with. Instead of showing their face on-stream, they use a character – sometimes 2D, sometimes 3D – instead.

The likes of Ironmouse, Gawr Gura, Usada Pekora, and Mori Calliope have led the way for full-time VTubers. Ironmouse managed to topple Kai Cenat’s Twitch subscriber record at the backend of 2024. Well, before the AMP star reclaimed it anyway.

With the rise of AI, including fake streamers and VTubers that don’t even exist getting attention on Twitch and social media, there have been some suggestions that they could start taking over.

Hololive CEO thinks AI Vtubers won’t replace them

However, Hololive CEO Yagoo doesn’t see it that way for a few big reasons.

“Are we heading towards a future where AI replaces VTubers? I’ve been asked this question frequently in recent interviews, and my answer remains clear: No, I don’t think we are,” he said in a LinkedIn post. “I don’t think AI will replace VTubers.

“The appeal of VTubers does not lie solely in the technology that powers them,” Yagoo added. “While the tech is undeniably impressive and enhances the viewer experience, the true essence of VTubing is rooted in the human element, the personality, the talent, and authenticity of the individual behind the avatar.”

Yagoo commented on LinkedIn about AI VTubers.

The Hololive CEO added that “AI VTubing will never become mainstream,” because it lacks the personality side of things.

“At its core, VTubing is about connection, community, and shared experiences. It’s about bringing people together, and that is something only humans can truly achieve,” he closed out.

VTubing continues to be on the rise and is something plenty are looking to get into it. But, it requires plenty of skills that many don’t possess.
