The annual index put out by Mexico’s Citizens Council for Public Safety and Justice naming the 50 most dangerous cities in the world has been released. Half of the cities on this list are either in Mexico or the United States.

Based on the criteria used to come up with the list – the number of homicides for every 100,000 residents – 20 Mexican cities and five American cities qualify as the most dangerous in the world. Not only that, seven of the top 10 are in Mexico, WHTM News reports.

Coming in at number one is Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 2022, Port-au-Prince was ranked number 20, so the city has made quite a jump on the list in just a couple of years.

Second through sixth on the list of most dangerous cities in the world are all in Mexico: Colima (number one in 2022), Acapulco, Manzanillo, Tijuana, and Ciudad Obregon (third on the list in 2022). Machala, Ecuador breaks up the list at number eight, but then it returns back to Mexico for cities number eight and nine: Celaya and Zamora (number two in 2022). Rounding out the top 10 is Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The next new entries on the list with regard to country is Mandela Bay, South Africa at number 14 and Feira de Santana, Brazil at number 22. Kingston, Jamaica is listed 24th, followed by the first American entry on the list: Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis was also ranked 25th in 2022.

At number 26 we see Santa Maria, Colombia. After that, no other different countries make the list.

As for the United States, Baltimore comes in at number 40 (down from 17th in 2022), New Orleans is 45th (8th in 2022), followed by Detroit (23rd in 2022) at 46, and Cleveland (27th in 2022) in the 48th spot. Falling off the top 50 list since 2022 is Milwaukee, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Philadelphia. So, all in all, every city in the United States that made the 2022 most dangerous cities list dropped, some significantly.
