System of a Down React to Golden Globes' Glenn Close Intro

So, legendary actress Glenn Close did play drums in System of a Down after all? Turns out a seemingly random shout-out of the band during the Golden Globes ceremony on Sunday night (January 5th) may have some weight to it, thanks to a confirmation from guitarist-singer Daron Malakian.

Upon introducing Close to the stage, Golden Globes host and Consequence‘s 2024 Comedian of the Year Nikki Glaser said, “To present our next award, please welcome from Netflix’s Back in Action, three-time Golden Globe winner, Hollywood icon, and former drummer for System of a Down, Glenn Close!”

Say what?!? The funny yet bizarre mention of System of a Down caught the attention of Malakian, who shared the clip on his Instagram, and wrote, “Bet you didn’t know!!!! Bet you didn’t know!!!!! Somewhere between our first drummer and John, Glenn Close was tearing shit up on the drums for us!!!!!!”

In addition to referencing the lyrics to both “Violent Pornography” and “Toxicity,” Malakian all but confirmed that Glenn Close did indeed drum for SOAD in between first drummer Andy Khachaturian and longtime drummer John Dolmayan.

That would put Close’s time in System of a Down somewhere during a brief moment in 1997, right about the time she was starring as Vice President Kathryn Bennett in Air Force One. While her stint in the band didn’t last long, it definitely left an indelible mark on Malakian and company.

Fans can catch System of a Down (with Dolmayan behind the kit, we presume) when they play a series of North American stadium shows this summer. Each city will feature a different co-headliner, namely Korn, Deftones, and Avenged Sevenfold. Pick up tickets here.
