Not many people can say the pandemic helped make their dreams come true, but Mayan Lopez is continuing to make huge steps in her career after a life-changing TikTok video in 2020. The daughter of George Lopez has landed her first major movie role.
Mayan will star in the supernatural film The Evilry, joining the previously announced cast of Brec Bassinger, Elena Kampouris, Dylan Walsh, Tony Pierce, Evan Ross, Marissa Reyes, Teri Polo, and Faye Dunaway. She is also an executive producer, per Deadline.
She shared the exciting news on Instagram with a screenshot of the Deadline announcement, writing, “I’m so incredibly excited to announce that I’M DOING A MOVIE!.”
The 28-year-old actress was particularly stoked about working with the Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and BAFTA Award winner Dunaway. “And if I couldn’t be excited enough, I get to act alongside the iconic and incomparable Faye Dunaway! I cannot wait to join this incredible group. Let’s get spooky,” she continued.
The plot is under wraps, but according to Deadline, she will play the role of Aimee, who runs a spiritual bookstore with Dunaway’s character, Anastasia. Anastasia is a spiritualist in the town who “acts as a bridge of enlightenment, coming to the aid of Crystal (Bassinger), guiding her to the revelation behind her cousin (Kampouris) and her Dark Secret.” Written and directed by Alexander Garcia, the film begins production in January in West Virginia.
The first and last movie Mayan worked on was George’s film Mr. Troop Mom, which was released in 2009 when she was 13.
Mayan’s road to success
Mayan has been around the industry and is a comedian and trained improviser, but her acting career took off in 2020 after she began sharing videos on TikTok, talking about her daddy issues with her famous father Geroge. The video that changed everything showed her upside-down twerking, responding to someone who had attacked her dad.
Debby Wolfe came across the video, and Lopez vs. Lopez was born. Mayan told HOLA! USA as our digital cover star in April it feels like she manifested it and that it came to be because she let go of control and followed her gut. “I feel like I manifested it… In the timing of everything,” she explained.
With 39 episodes and two seasons under her belt and a third on the way, the experience should help her with her next project and those to come.
