HOZIER has slammed fans’ disrespectful remarks toward his girlfriend Hana Mayeda in a now-deleted Instagram comment.
Although previously remaining coy about his relationship with the model, the Too Sweet singer, confirmed they were together while defending her on social media.
Last year, in July 2023, Hana shared several photos and videos on Instagram documenting her European vacation.
“Unexpected magic in Italy,” she captioned the post.
While most of the uploads focused on the Italian villas and tranquil ocean views, one snap in particular grabbed her followers’ attention.
In the photo, Hana was seen kissing a man, whose face was mostly hidden by hers, on the far side of a pool.
In the comment section, one fan asked, “Is that hozier in slide 3?”
Hozier, whose real name is Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, entered the chat to address the “insensitive” conversation that had blossomed from the fan’s comment.
“Hi guys, Andrew here. the guy who wrote that song! It’s about waiting for lockdown to end,” he started.
Hozier continued, “Now that’s out of the way, it’d feel really good if you could refrain from carrying out a conversation like this on my gf’s personal page.
“It’s entirely baseless, and feels as insensitive and disrespectful as it would for anyone else.”
“I cherish the privacy we aim to keep for ourselves,” the Irish singer concluded.
Fans responded to the Take Me to Church singer’s defense and of his girlfriend Hana on a pop culture-dedicated Reddit board.
“Hozier confirmed his gf!” exclaimed an excited Hozier fan.
They continued, “It has been confirmed through Hozier himself that Hana Mayeda is his gf!
“Apparently fans were harassing her on insta so he defended her earlier tonight!
“I am pretty sure its okay to post now because they have both publicly confirmed their relationship! She also liked the post! <3.”
“That is a green flag right there with Hozier defending his partner,” commented another.
The commenter continued, “She looks gorgeous. The harassment makes me really despise the parasocial aspect of being a celebrity.
“Also, his comment/reply is very polite and to the point.”
“Oh she’s gorgeous, they make such a nice pair I’m sure. I hope they get the privacy they want and are happy,” added a third.
A fourth person wrote, “Fans are deranged. There’s no way to know that’s him in the third pic? That’s so detective work.”
“Geez and fans are still acting like it’s such a positive that he paid them attention when he’s more likely to be pissed and worried because his fans are attacking her,” mentioned another.
CHART TOPPER
Earlier this year, Hozier admitted “it’s absolutely staggering” after becoming the fourth Irish artist to reach the number one spot on the US charts.
The singer was the first Irish musical act in over three decades to take the number-one spot in the States.
Sinéad O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U was the last Irish single to top the US charts.
That feat was done back in April 1990.
U2 had two number ones on the Billboard chart in 1987 with I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and With or Without You.
And Gilbert O’Sullivan went number one with Alone Again (Naturally) for six weeks in 1972.
Hozier released his hit single Too Sweet on March 22 alongside a series of unreleased tracks from his latest album Unreal Unearth.
The 34-year-old has now seen the song hit number one in countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
THANKFUL ARTIST
Taking to social media, the Cherry Wine singer thanked his fans for their support of the single.
In a video posted to X, formally Twitter, the megastar said, “Hey, it’s Hozier here. I just want to say a huge huge thank you to all the supporters, all the fans around the world.
“We are number one in Australia, number one in New Zealand, number one in Canada, number one in the US and a second-week number one in Ireland and the UK.”
The Would That I artist revealed that the reaction to the track has been “absolutely staggering” and admitted he has been “taken massively by surprise”.
He continued, “But I just want to say thank you so so much for your support. I’m so thrilled that you’re enjoying Too Sweet and it means the world to me so thank you.”
Hozier first shot to stardom in 2013 with the release of his debut single Take Me To Church.
The song peaked at number two on the Billboard chart and was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammys.
