Oklahoma has announced its plan to honor the late Toby Keith during Sooner football games this fall. When the third quarter comes to an end, one of the country music star’s many hits will play out across the loudspeakers.
The announcement comes in the school’s effort to upgrade the gameday experience for those in attendance.
“As new members of the Southeastern Conference, we’re mindful of the opportunities we have to elevate the game day experience, and we’re excited to have an even greater stage to showcase how we create Sooner Magic for our fans,” said Executive Associate Athletics Director Leah Beasley.
The Sooners are transitioning into a new era as they eye their first season in the SEC. The school is hoping to enter with a bang, providing an exciting atmosphere for both home and visiting fans.
Oklahoma’s athletic department unveiled plans to improve the environment in a press release on Monday.
Changes include a concert series to kick off football weekends in Norman, an “elevated party” pregame experience at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, new and improved videoboard graphics, and expanded concession offerings.
The most interesting note, though, was the introduction of a Toby Keith singalong before the fourth quarter.
The Toby Keith Tribute 3rd/4th quarter break will celebrate the Oklahoma icon, giving 85,000 fans the opportunity to sing along with the legendary Sooner superfan.
Which song will play is unknown, and with his never-ending list of hits, it could change weekly.
The first opportunity for Oklahoma fans to join in will come on Friday when the Sooners host Temple.
Toby Keith passed away following a battle with cancer earlier this year. His death sparked a massive response in both the sport and entertainment worlds.
The school quickly found ways to honor the country music singer in the wake of his passing, with the basketball team serving beverages in red solo cups for a matchup with rival Oklahoma State in February.
The Sooners will continue to remember him this fall.
Keith briefly attended Villanova before deciding to pursue his music dream. Still, he’s been a lifelong Sooner fan and a staple at OU sporting events.
He won’t be in the stands this football season, but his presence will still be felt!
