JODIE Sweetin has defended the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony amid backlash from Full House co-star Candace Cameron Bure.
Candace, 48, slammed the performance in a scathing video on social media, claiming it was not “appropriate for children.”
After she posted her clip, Jodie, 42, appeared to hit back with a post of her own to her Instagram Story.
She shared a text post that showed a photo of drag queens featured in the Olympic opening ceremony performance as well as a picture of the painting The Feast of Dionysus.
“The drag queens at the Olympics were re-creating the feast of Dionysus, not The Last Supper. And even if you thought it was a Christian reference – what’s the harm? Why is it a ‘parody’ and not a tribute? Can drag queens not be Christian too?” text along with the post read.
Jodie, who played Stephanie Tanner on Full House, did not tag Candace or directly reference her or her post but appeared to be taking a swipe at her by refuting some of the claims she made in her post.
YOU GO, GIRL
Both posts were shared on social media by the X account @MrPopOfficial.
In the comments, fans gushed over Jodie’s take.
“Jodie has always been THAT girl,” one fan posted.
“Stephanie Tanner was always my favorite!” gushed another supporter.
“It wasn’t even related to Christianity,” slammed a third.
“Oh end it Jodie, this is why we love you!” praised a fourth fan.
“This is why Stephanie is the fan favorite,” someone else posted.
CANDACE COMPLAINS
Candace, who played Stephanie’s older sister DJ Tanner on Full House, posted a video to her Instagram Story and then to her feed in which she complained about the performance.
“I didn’t really want to weigh in on the Olympics opening ceremony publicly because it’ll – you know, I always risk it becoming a headline,” she began.
“But it felt too important not too. And I love the Olympic games.”
Full House Cast
Full House premiered in September 1987 on ABC. The show was a hit, running for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. For years after it ended, fans pleaded with the show’s cast to reunite for a reboot. Finally they did in 2016, bringing back a number of the original cast members. The show ran for five seasons, ending in 2020.
Here’s a look at the Full House cast:
- Bob Saget as Danny Tanner
- John Stamos as Jesse Katsopolis
- Jodie Sweetin as Stephani Tanner
- Candace Cameron Bure as DJ Tanner
- Dave Coulier as Joey Gladstone
- Andrea Barber as Kimmy Gibbler
- Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as Michelle Tanner
- Lori Loughlin as Rebecca Katsopolis
- Scott Weinger as Steve Hale
Candace is married to Valeri Bure, a former NHL player who has won two Olympic medals.
She went on to say, “To watch such an incredible and wonderful event that’s gonna take place over the next two weeks and to see the opening ceremonies completely blasphemed and mock the Christian faith with their interpretation of the Last Supper was disgusting.
“And it made me so sad. And someone said you shouldn’t be sad, you should be mad about it. And I’m like, trust me it makes me mad but I’m more sad.”
Candace’s tirade against the opening ceremony continued in her caption.
“You asked me to make this shareable on story, so here it is. My take on the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. Since posting, many have tried to correct me saying it wasn’t about an interpretation of DaVinci’s The Last Supper, but a Greek god and the festival of Dionysus who is a god of lust, insanity, religious ecstasy, ritual madness, etc.”
She added, “I still don’t see how that relates to unifying the world through competitive sports and acceptable for children to watch. In any case, I’m not buying it. I hope you’ll listen all the way through.”
“God loves each and every one of you and His desire is for you to know Him. I won’t stop praying and calling on Jesus’ name. Share the gospel message. Let this be an encouragement to be bold in your faith. Let us rend our hearts back to God, father of Abraham. Let us pray. And pray for the Christian athletes to shine their light for the glory of God.”
Candace faced major backlash in the comments from fans.
“Oy. People, read a book. This had absolutely nothing to do with the last supper. The Olympics originated in Greece. That was actually a depiction of the GREEK GOD Dionysus… of winemaking, fertility, FESTIVITY 9which this segment was literally named), among others. Seriously. Get off your high horses and sit down. Your religion is NOT the only one in existence. Neither are your beliefs or your history. Get educated before you spew your hate for YOUR God’s children,” one critic commented.
“I’m amazed you haven’t taken this down in embarrassment yet. It’s so utterly self centered to think this was somehow about you or your faith. Learn some history, maybe, starting with the Olympics, Greece, Europe, France, and how this opening may have not been to your taste but was a reflection of history and zero to do with your religion. Also pretty gross to only cheer on ‘Christian’ athletes. Really? I find that more disgusting than the opening. Are the Olympics about the countries, about the USA, or about your religion? This isn’t your first terrible take, but it might be your most embarrassing. Gross,” commented another hater.
“Ummm the Olympics rooted in Greek history. Open your eyes and learn about others rather than passing judgement. Only God can do that,” someone else critiqued.
“Do a little research… it was not The Last Supper. It was a depiction of an ancient Greek Bacchanal… because the Olympics are ancient & Greek!” slammed a fourth person.
