The Accountant 2 will be back on the big screen with Ben Affleck confirmed to return as the bad-ass, money laundering accountant Christian Wolff. The Accountant 2 is a sequel to the highly successful film 2016’s The Accountant, which grossed over $150 million for Warner Brothers against a budget of only $44 million. With such a high profit, it was expected that Warner Brothers would be working on a sequel soon.
But with Affleck’s busy schedule and personal projects, it took a while to get the actor, director, and newly married man to work on the sequel. Recent news that The Accountant Season 2 has been confirmed has been met with happiness from most fans because the project has been in the works from as far back as 2017. Here is everything you need to know about The Accountant Season 2.
When Will The Accountant 2 Be Released?
In 2017, Deadline reported that The Accountant sequel would return with Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor. Almost six years later, The Accountant 2 will start filming towards the end of 2024. The film is expected to hit theatres either mid or end of 2025.
What Happened in 2016’s The Accountant
One of the reasons why 2016’s The Accountant was so well-received is because of the multiple plot twists and the talent of Affleck and Bernthal, who made the film so much more enjoyable. The film follows Wolff, who works as a freelance accountant for criminal organizations while helping those he can along the way. He ends up meeting a young girl, Danna Cummings (Anna Kendrick), who is caught in the chaos of embezzlement in the criminal organizations he works for, with a treasury agent hot on his heels.
When bodies start dropping all around him after the embezzlement is discovered, he must save himself and Danna, whom he has started having feelings for. It turns out the assassin killing people was his estranged brother, Braxton Wolff, and they end up meeting in the final act of the film. He is working for the film’s main antagonist, Lamar Blackburn. Their relationship is detailed throughout the movie, from when they were children to when their strict father raised them.
What Is the Plot of The Accountant 2?
The Accountant 2 is set to pick up soon after the events of the first film, which was so dramatic that it left fans wanting more. According to O’Connor, The Accountant 2 will focus more on Christian’s long-lost brother, Braxton Wolff, played by Jon Bernthal. With the possibility of a third movie in the works, it’s reasonable for the second movie to focus more on Brax so both their stories can come full circle in the third movie.
During an episode of 2021’s CinemaBlend Podcast, O’Connor confirmed that the third movie would be more of a buddy drama featuring the two brothers. At least there won’t be any significant deaths in The Accountant 2. Details about the main villain for the sequel film are yet to be revealed. With Bernthal being the main focus of this upcoming film, the second film could be much better than the first.
Who Is Cast in The Accountant 2?
According to Deadline, fans will be happy to hear that aside from Affleck, Bernthal, known for his role as The Punisher from Daredevil and in FX’s The Bear, J.K Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson will return for The Accountant 2. Simmons’s most recent project was Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Addai-Robinson’s recent projects including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The People We Hate at the Wedding. Affleck is coming off working on Amazon MGM’s Air about Nike’s extensive partnership with NBA player Michael Jordan.
Simmons spoke to Collider about the sequel and Affleck and O’Connor’s dedication to the film, saying,
“It’s just such great characters and such a great story. I’m glad they worked their butts off and now are with a different studio and finally making it work. A lot of us are going to be back, and [I’m] really, really looking forward to my contribution to that and to the movie itself. It’s really good. Bill Dubuque did the script with Gavin obviously, and Ben’s input. It’s the same with Invincible , obviously it’s a team game, but those three guys particularly have really been behind this for 7-8 years now, and finally it’s coming to fruition and I’m really excited about it“.
