Collaborative moments continued during the fourth day of Jam Cruise 20, Wednesday, Feb. 28. From start to finish, billed acts welcomed friends to the stage for specialty team-ups–for which the floating festival is known. After the second and final port day in Grand Cayman, folks returned to the ship ready for another hefty dose of musical medicine.
To start the afternoon entertainment, Eggy hosted Choose Your Own Eggventure. The band welcomed guests and led the audience in a game: solving the mystery of who stole Captain Mustang’s wheel (Will McGee, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country). Regarded as “suspects,” the band welcomed guests, including Cool Cool Cool’s Sammi Garett, who assisted on a cover of Abba’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight),” Tim Palmeri and Doom Flamingo’s Kanika Moore on “Love the One You’re With.”
Donato joined Eggy on their original “One Stop Shop” before the stolen wheel mystery was solved, and band member Alex Bailey was deemed the thief. Mustang delivered Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Southern Cross” to celebrate cracking the case, never breaking character as the captain–complete with a pirate drawl.
Sit-ins continued on the Pool Deck during The New Mastersounds’ frame. At different points, Eddie Roberts and company welcomed talented friends such as Lamar Williams Jr., The Horn Section and Shira Elias. Also joining was Duane Betts, who assisted on the Allman Brothers Band original, “Ain’t Wastin’ No Time.”
Elsewhere on the ship, Matt Butler’s Everyone Orchestra ignited the Pantheon Theater, capturing the meaning of collaboration with various artists, including Betts, Ivan Neville, Mike Dillon, Marc Brownstein, Moore and others. Another peak had to be the collective take on “How Lucky Are We?” with Butler evoking crowd response for a full-on family feel that captured the essence of the Jam Cruise experience.
Another notable moment had to be Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe’s take on “Miss You,” which served as a nod to his gig with The Rolling Stones. In the Black and White Lounge, Donato’s Cosmic Country tapped into their highly anticipated frame, which included sit-ins from Cory Wong followed by Cris Jacobs. Then, Betts and Williams Jr. showed up; the former kicked off his sandals and performed barefoot.
During Galactic’s set, the Dumpstaphunk horns joined in, layering the composition and excelling it to greater sonic heights. Roberts also sat in, prior to a high-flying conclusion: a cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass saw assistance from The HillBenders throughout the frame, jamming on classic Dead material like “Mexicali Blues,” “Feels Like a Stranger,” and “Brown-Eyed Women,” also included was a spectacular take on Tom Petty’s “Yer So Bad,” which evoked humor from Keller, who joked about the tune appearing on a Shoreline ‘91 setlist.
Early morning sets included a Purple Party, which functioned as a tribute to Prince, which coincided with Logic’s 2 a.m. set in the Galaxy Disco. Also featured was Betts and Jacobs team-up in the Black and White Lounge for a super jam.
With day four on the books, the fifth and final day of Jam Cruise 20 will kick off with a frame from Big Richard on the Pool Deck at 1:15 p.m. Keep up with Relix on Instagram for live music moments and the latest Jam Cruise coverage.
