It’s been the year of Taylor Swift, and that’s undeniable whether you’re a fan of hers or not. The pop singer has had as big as a year as any music star has had in decades.
And, she was honored with a pretty cool achievement, as the Empire State Building in Manhattan did a pretty cool light show on Wednesday, her 34th birthday. Take a look, and it’s better with the sound on.
The Empire State Building is lit up for various things frequently. Often, they are related to sports, and will light up in the colors of New York City sports teams after a big win. Or, it will celebrate a holiday, like the Fourth of July or Hanukkah. It’s celebrating Hanukkah right now, but it took a break from blue and white with a flame color at the top to do that impressive lights show for Taylor Swift.
The pop star was recently named Time Person of the Year after a 2023 of complete domination. Swift saw three albums go to number one this year, and had six albums in the Billboard Charts top ten at one time recently. No living artist had ever accomplished that feat.
Her Eras Tour was an absolute smash hit both in the USA and abroad. Retail ticket prices were sky-high, drawing the ire of Congress towards Ticketmaster. In each city, her tour was an absolute force of nature, with tens of thousands waiting outside of stadiums to listen to what was going on inside.
When Swift showed up to watch the Kansas City Chiefs-Chicago Bears game in September to cheer on then-rumored love interest Travis Kelce, that sent her into a new stratosphere in American society. Though the attention paid to her attendance at Kelce’s games has died, down that was definitely her year, as evidenced by Time Magazine naming her Time Person of the Year.
All that adds up to a pretty cool honor from the Empire State Building.
