Accomplished jazz musician Kamasi Washington has confirmed his new album, Fearless Movement, set for release on May 3rd.

Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album in six years, and the saxophonist refers to the record as his “dance album”: “It’s not literal,” Washington clarifies in a statement, “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music —expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”

Another significant theme of Fearless Movement is new fatherhood, inspired by Washington’s experience having his first child several years ago. In addition to his daughter appearing on the album, Fearless Movement features contributions from André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, BJ the Chicago Kid, D Smoke, and fellow member of Washington’s collaborative group Dinner Party, Terrace Martin.

In support of Fearless Movement, Kamasi Washington will be embarking on a North American tour throughout May and June. Kicking off at New York City’s Beacon Theater the day after Fearless Movement’s release on May 4th, the tour will see Kamasi Washington playing shows in Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, Vancouver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles before concluding on July 31st in Alexandria, Virginia. See Kamasi Washington’s full list of tour dates below.

Kamasi Washington has also shared Fearless Movement’s lead single, “Prologue.” Despite what the title suggests, “Prologue” is actually the closing track of Fearless Movement, clocking in at just over eight minutes and simmering to a boil throughout. The rhythm section is utterly relentless, and there are several moments where it feels like the song might even cave in on itself. Fitting Washington’s theme of “dance,” the song arrives with a music video featuring striking, evocative choreography, mostly presented in slow motion. Watch it below.

Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album since 2018’s Heaven and Earth. Since then, he’s released two albums with his collaborative project Dinner Party and shared several one-off singles.
