Numero Group is finally giving Majesty Crush their flowers with Butterflies Don’t Go Away, an upcoming double-LP collection commemorating the oft-overlooked shoegazers’ beloved discography.
Majesty Crush formed in Detroit in 1990 and were opening for bands like Mazzy Star and Royal Trux shortly thereafter. After a few smaller releases, including 1992’s Fan EP, the quartet signed with Elektra subsidiary Dali Records. But when Dali folded less than a month after putting out Majesty Crush’s sole LP Love 15, their bright future burned out fast.
Out March 29th, Butterflies Don’t Go Away compiles all of Majesty Crush’s material, from Love 15 to various singles to the Fan EP (the latter of which will be available digitally for the very first time on February 20th). Pre-orders for the double-LP are ongoing, and as a preview, Numero and Majesty Crush have shared the Fan EP version of one of their best-known tracks, “No. 1 Fan.”
“The Fan EP version of ‘No. 1 Fan’ is, if not THE, then certainly a major turning point in the Majesty Crush story,” bassist Hobey Echlin explains in a press release. “What was essentially a polished demo on a self-released 5-song EP became an area radio hit on the local alt-rock station,” Echlin tells. “By the time the band recorded it in late ‘91 with producer Mike E. Clark in the demo room of The Tempermill Studio, ‘No. 1 Fan’ sounded like a band whose ambitions were outgrowing their indie roots.”
