After a trickle of single releases, vocal powerhouse Sierra Ferrell has delivered the final preview of her impending album, Trail of Flowers, due in full this Friday, March 22. The musician’s latest number, “American Dreaming,” dropped today alongside its official music video, which showcases Ferrell’s reckoning with the notion of equality and aspirations wrapped up in the ideals of the American Dream.
Serving as the opening track off the impending set, “American Dreaming” follows a similar motif to previous deliveries: anthems of resilience and self-preservation in the wake of dominant capitalist themes, which clog society’s ability to decipher want from need. Carried by Ferrell’s old-timey approach, she invites the listener to leave present-day and transports them to 1940s Appalachia using her sharp tongue and vintage vocals to excel the sonic experience.
“American Dreaming” presents crashes of steel guitar, banjo, piano, and celesta, partnered with backing vocals from guests Lukas Nelson and Melody Walker. Timeless musicianship tackles modern ponderings, tallying loneliness and a sweep of emotions ranging from jubilant expressions to feelings of distress and anguish akin to the 35-year-old artist’s journey from train-bouncing vagabond to viral favorite.
Trail of Flowers was produced by Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton), with additional production by Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Gillian Welch) and arrives after Ferrell’s 2021 debut, Long Time Coming. Today’s single release follows single releases like barnburner “Fox Hunt,” barstool mystique “Dollar Bill Bar,” and destined-classic “I Could Drive You Crazy.”
