The Smile have released with their album, Wall of Eyes. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
Recorded by the trio of Tom Skinner and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood between Oxford and Abbey Road Studios, Wall of Eyes features string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra, with production and mixing credits going to Sam Petts-Davies. It arrives as the follow-up to their 2022 debut, A Light for Attracting Attention.
The eight-track project was announced in November of last year with the release of the album’s title track and its accompanying Paul Thomas Anderson-directed music video. Previous singles include “Friend of a Friend” — which was first previewed during The Smile’s 2022-2023 tour — and “Bending Hectic.”
In his review, Consequence’s Jonah Krueger praised Wall of Eyes, calling it a “swirling, vibrant world that distills the foundation of its predecessor down to the essentials before letting what’s left bloom and mutate into its own beast.” He also named “Friend of a Friend” as a standout track, writing that it ” quickly established itself as one of the best songs the trio has come through with yet.”
