Singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers released her latest single, “In The Living Room,“ out now via Capitol Records. The new track arrives amid a busy year for Rogers, who released Don’t Forget Me back in April and kicked off her first headlining arena tour of the same name in June. Rogers also shared an accompanying music video directed by Grant Singer.
Like the standout tracks on Don’t Forget Me, “In The Living Room” is both dynamic and evocative, made complete by Rogers’ inimitable vocal performance. Rogers wrote “In The Living Room” with co-writer and co-producer Ian Fitchuk in March of 2023, just after the two finished working on her third studio record. Her latest offering picks up where Don’t Forget Me left off, with similar sonic and lyrical themes: “It’s a song about the beauty and pain of memory and the way that interweaves with reality when you’re processing the exit of a person in your life,” Rogers explains, alluding to the motif of reminiscence in her work.
Exploring memory and grief as a non-linear process, the companion video pays homage to artists like Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Carrie Mae Weems, Davide Sorrenti, Larry Clark and Ingmar Bergman, following a loungewear-clad Rogers through a series of empty rooms. As Rogers sings, “All of the things we pulled apart / I let it go, it doesn’t matter,” the camera cuts from the Maryland native embracing a lover to the singer lying on the carpet alone. But a Maggie Rogers video without dancing would be incomplete: singing about “ dancing in the living room” during the vibrant chorus, Rogers breaks out into her signature moves, smiling.
The release of “In The Living Room” precedes Part II of the Don’t Forget Me Tour by just one day, as Rogers will kick off the second leg of her inaugural headlining arena tour tomorrow, Oct. 9, at Austin’s Moody Center. After evenings at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Oct. 15 and Boston’s TD Garden on Oct. 17, Rogers will bring her spectral staging to New York’s illustrious Madison Square Garden for back-to-back evenings on Oct. 19 and 20. Other upcoming stops include Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum, Chicago’s United Center, and Inglewood, Calif.’s Kia Forum. Ethereal singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty will support Rogers on all upcoming stagings.
