Kamasi Washington has recruited André 3000 for “Dream State,” the latest offering from the musician’s forthcoming album Fearless Movement.
Across a hypnotic eight minutes, Washington’s saxophone and André 3000’s flute interweave and enchant. As the song’s title suggests, there’s a dream-like trance that envelops the song, but it becomes much more active and vibrant when Kamasi Washington’s rhythm section enter. “Dream State” is more meditative than previous Fearless Movement cut “Prologue,” but it still features some dazzling, stirring moments of improvisation.

Of the song and the collaboration, Kamasi Washington wrote in a statement that the song “is a celebration of life and the opportunity it gives us to explore new possibilities. We created this song together instantaneously as we improvised off the music we made in the moment. It was such an honor to work on this song with one of my heroes, the great André 3000.”
André 3000 shared the same sentiment, writing “When you receive a text from a wind friend something beautiful usually transpires. The day Kamasi invited me to a session for Fearless Movement I was so geeked and honored. Now, every time we get together something interesting happens. We first played during a recording session for New Blue Sun and it’s been fruitful ever since.” Stream the song below.
Kamasi Washington previously shared “Prologue” when announcing Fearless Movement last month. Fearless Movement, Washington’s seventh solo album and his first in six years, will be out on May 3rd. The very next day, May 4th, Kamasi Washington begins his 2024 tour in New York City. Get tickets for all his upcoming shows here.
