Viral ‘standing on feet’ TikTok trend has serious injury risks, experts warn

After the ‘standing on feet’ trend started going viral on TikTok, experts shared with Dexerto the serious risks of injury it poses.

The viral trend involves one person lying on their back with their legs extended upward while another individual attempts to balance on their feet. Although the challenge appears effortless in countless videos, professionals warn it is far from safe.

With over 234.9K videos under the trend’s sound and millions of views tagged with #StandingonFeet, the challenge has rapidly gained popularity on TikTok. Videos of people trying the balancing act often garner millions of views, but user comments hint at hidden risks.

One user asked, “How the heck do you get up there? Can you do a tutorial?” Others confessed, “I tried with my sister and fell,” or shared concerns like, “How do you get down? I would fall.” While many viewers find the trend entertaining, experts emphasize the potentially dangerous consequences.

Expert warns against viral trend

Medical and legal professionals are urging caution. According to personal injury law experts at 844SeeMike, the challenge normalizes risky behavior, particularly among young users, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries.

“There is extreme concern over serious injuries from falls that result in following this dangerous trend,” said Mike Agruss, a Founding Attorney and Consumer Safety Advocate.

“Peer pressure is a huge factor, especially for younger users who want to be seen in a certain way by their friends and other kids their age. The fact remains that stunts like these on unstable bases can lead to fractures, sprains, or even crushing injuries.”

He highlighted the significant risk of head, spine, and wrist trauma, stating: “The higher the position at the time of the fall, the greater the risk for more severe injuries, particularly for the head, spine, or wrists.”

Agruss believes that platforms should issue warnings and work to prevent harmful challenges from spreading unchecked. “These viral videos often make these things look easy while downplaying the true dangers,” he said.

“Social media platforms should do much more to warn users about these dangerous challenges before allowing them to spread like wildfire.”

This is just one of many crazes that experts have flagged red, such as another personal injury lawyer, who warned against a viral trend that had TikTokers eating packing peanuts.
