OpenAI CEO claims Ghibli image trend is “melting” ChatGPT’s processors

The Studio Ghibli AI image trend has taken the internet by storm, with images based on the iconic animation studio’s style being pretty much everywhere you look.

However, this has taken its toll on ChatGPT’s graphics cards to the point where its CEO had to take action. The rollout of ChatGPT 4o has been a bit too successful.

Sam Altman announced that, while he’s glad to see so many people using OpenAI’s product, the sudden influx of images is “melting” their graphics cards to the point where ChatGPT has had to scale back their operations a bit. At least for the time being.

Ghibli AI trend is melting ChatGPT’s GPUs

If you’ve been on any social media platform as of late, you’ll have noticed that it’s flooded with AI generated studio Ghibli style images. They’re pretty much impossible to avoid.

Additionally, they show off how far AI image generation has come, with most of them missing the typical telltale signs of AI images like incoherent text or appendages looking a bit off. However, all this comes at a very real processing cost.

“It’s super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt. but our GPUs are melting,” explained OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Creating these images en masse requires a massive amount of energy, the sort that not even a massive GPU farm like what OpenAI has is beginning to buckle beneath the weight of processing all the requests.

He has had to enforce rate limits to try and make the process a bit more efficient in the meantime, with these limits affecting even paid users. He hopes to give free users 3 generated images a day soon, but no timeline has been given.

However, this also results in a massive power draw. Google, for instance, has had to resort to buying power from several nuclear reactors to fuel its AI endeavors. Though Altman aims to make GPT 4o more efficient, OpenAI may have to resort to finding better methods of drawing power as well.

This hasn’t stopped people from using it, though, with streamers like nmplol pushing back on people calling them out for using image generation.
