After Pitchfork and several other outlets have declared Brat Summer dead, Charli XCX has responded, hinting that new content may be coming next week.
Sharing screenshots of posts by Pitchfork, Dazed, and ANTIART — all alluding to the end of Brat Summer in the wake of her now-viral tweet, “kamala IS brat” — Charli said “oh ? see u next week :)” Adding to the excitement, Chappell Roan shared a photo with Charli’s brat CD, teasing a possible collaboration. See the posts below.
It’s unclear exactly what’s coming next week, but what is clear is that BRAT’s cultural stock has skyrocketed since the album dropped this past June. With its distinct chartreuse palette and frank typography, its aesthetic influence quickly grew beyond Charli’s listenership, and ultimately stepped right into the national spotlight with the endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Capitalizing on the moment after Charli’s tweet, Harris’ campaign embraced the trend, changing their social media presence to be BRAT themed. Now, as Pitchfork pointed out, everyone from Jake Tapper to Eric Adams to legions of TikTokers and more have gotten in on the Brat Summer jokes.
That’s distanced BRAT from some of its original audience, but cultural critiques from Pitchfork aside, Brat Summer is unlikely to burn out so quickly, especially if new music arrives next week. Besides, Charli’s “Sweat” tour with Troye Sivan will kick off in September, heading to cities like New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and more (grab tickets here).
