Bizarre diet trends are nothing new. For about a century, people ate arsenic with their meals in hopes of shedding a few pounds. In the 1920s and 30s people were eating entire grapefruits with each meal they had. But with the growth of internet fads in the early 21st century, so too came several ridiculous fad diets.
One of which that has caught on the most is the carnivore diet, which tells users to cut out all carbohydrates and eat nothing but meat and other animal products, like beef, chicken, pork, fish, and eggs. The idea is that by cutting all carbs, your body will burn fat for energy and you’ll lose weight.
The problem, however, is that is really, really stupid. The all animal diet is extremely high in saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium while lacking important elements of a well-rounded diet such as fiber, vitamins and minerals. Which is why a man in his 40s recently ended up with a cholesterol level over 1,000 and freakish yellow lines all over his hands.
Today reports that the unnamed man, who is in his 40s, ate 6-9 pounds of cheese a day, plus sticks of butter and other fat that he would add to his daily hamburgers. The result was a cholesterol level over five times the amount of a healthy human being, which led to cholesterol deposits stored in his hands that caused bizarre yellow markings across each of them.
“We believe that is a way of the body to eliminate the additional cholesterol from the bloodstream whenever it cannot process it,” Dr. Kostas Marmagkiolis, an interventional cardiologist who treated the man stated.
Extreme levels of cholesterol leads to plaque buildup in arteries, which can eventually lead to higher risk of a heart attack or stroke. So please, fitness bros (and ladies), eat a vegetable every now and then. We promise it’ll be okay.
