Neko Case has announced Neon Grey Midnight Green, her first album in seven years. Set to release on Sept. 26 via Anti- Records, the revered indie singer-songwriter and The New Pornographers vocalist’s eighth full-length release to date arrives as her first solely self-produced project. To herald her long-awaited return, she’s shared the lead single “Wreck.”
Case recorded Neon Grey Midnight Green at her Vermont home studio, Carnassial Sound, which was rebuilt after being damaged by a fire while she was recording 2018’s Hell-On in Sweden. Additional sessions contributing to the record’s richly layered sound were conducted in Denver with the PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra and in Portland, Ore., with longtime collaborator Tucker Martine.
“There are so few producers who are women, nonbinary, or trans”, Case reflected. “People don’t think of us as an option. I’m proud to say I produced this record. It is my vision. It is my veto power. It is my taste.”
Case’s taste is on full view in “Wreck,” which incorporates her well-documented learnings towards rough-hewn gothic Americana in a propulsive folk-rock backbeat, lofted to dizzying heights with soft, staccato horns and ardent rushes of strings. Her captivating vocals describe a love beyond earthly understanding and climb to a brilliant outpouring as she becomes “an eruption / A wreck of possibilities / A volatility of stars.”
