Venamoris, the duo of legendary drummer Dave Lombardo and his wife Paula, have dropped the new song “In the Shadows,” their first release after inking a fresh record deal with Ipecac Recordings.
The brooding track showcases the husband-wife duo’s post-metal sound.
Dave’s marching drums lie at the heart of the arrangement, repeating like a trip-hop style loop under waves of synth and distant, reverb-y guitars. Paula provides the melodic vocals, and her deeper register nestles in nicely with the musical accompaniment. The dark folk/metal of Emma Ruth Rundle and Chelsea Wolfe comes to mind.
“’In The Shadows’ is a song that arose from real-life feelings,” Paula shared in a press release. “The pulsating drum wholly evocative of marching forward even when internal unrest is still close-at-hand. It is a call for self-acceptance with the heaviness of a life well lived.”
Added Dave: “Venamoris is such an intimate project for the two of us. To have our sophomore album in Ipecac’s exceptionally skilled hands is a dream realized. We are estatic to be a part of this audacious label.”
Lombardo — who landed at No. 13 on Consequence‘s recent list of the 100 Best Drummers of All Time — now has now been a part of multiple projects on the label, including his own solo work as well as albums by Mr. Bungle and Dead Cross. In addition, he is best known as the founding drummer of Slayer, and also currently drums for the Original Misfits.
Meanwhile, Venamoris are prepping their Ipecac debut for a 2025 release. The duo has one full-length to its name so far, 2023’s Drown in Emotion, an LP that explored a mixture of neo-psychedelia, lounge jazz, and soft rock.
“Additional details will be shared soon,” according to the band. Stream “In the Shadows” below.
