Tool surprised attendees during the Bass Magazine Awards at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California on Thursday night (January 23rd) with a two-song set. The band was on hand to celebrate Justin Chancellor’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Chancellor was advertised to perform at the event with fellow bassists Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey, as well as “members of Tool.” However, fans at the intimate setting got a welcome surprise when the entire band showed up to perform “Schism” and “Jambi.”

Preceding the ceremony, Tool paid tribute to Chancellor on Instagram, writing, “Congratulations to our very own Justin Chancellor as he’s honored with a Bass Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his bass wizardry and alchemy with Tool, since 1995.”
The surprise gig came ahead of the band’s “Tool in the Sand” destination festival taking place March 7th-9th at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino & Royalton Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The three-day event will also feature performances by Mastodon, Primus, Coheed and Cambria, and more, with ticket packages available at the fest’s official site.
Tool will also play their first-ever South American shows this spring, as well as a couple gigs in Mexico, with tickets available here.
Fans can also catch Maynard James Keenan when he heads out on the “Sessanta V2.0” tour with his bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, along with Primus. Tickets for that outing can be purchased here.
