Nine Inch Nails Kick Off North American Tour with Josh Freese on Drums

Nine Inch Nails kicked off the North American leg of their “Peel It Back World Tour” on Wednesday night (August 6th) in Oakland, California, delivering a 20-song setlist featuring the return of drummer Josh Freese and the live debut of the new song “Alive As You Need Me to Be.”

The stateside outing follows a European/UK leg that ran from mid June through mid July. Similar to the shows on that run, the concert at the Oakland Arena featured a main stage and a B-Stage.

This time around, though, Freese is behind the drum kit, having replaced Ilan Rubin, who reportedly left NIN after the European leg to join Foo Fighters (who fired Freese earlier this year). It marks Freese’s second stint with NIN, and his first show playing with the legendary industrial band since December 2008.

Starting out on the B-Stage, frontman Trent Reznor and company offered stripped-down and/or reworked versions of “Right Where It Belongs,” “Ruiner,” and “Piggy.” Moving over to the main stage, NIN hit fans right away with the one-two punch of the explosive favorites “Wish” and “March of the Pigs,” among other tunes.

Shifting back to the B-Stage, NIN were joined by support act Boys Noize for four songs, including the aforementioned live debut of “Alive As You Need Me to Be,” the new song from the upcoming film Tron: Ares, for which NIN are providing the entire soundtrack.

Nine Inch Nails closed out the show with seven songs on the main stage, including classics like “The Perfect Drug” (with some nifty drumming by Freese), “Closer,” “Head Like a Hole,” and the set-closing “Hurt.”

Overall, 1994’s The Downward Spiral was the most represented album on the career-spanning setlist, with a total of six songs, with no more than two songs from any other release.

NIN’s North American tour, which marks the band’s first stateside outing in three years, continues Friday night (August 8th) in Portland, Oregon, and runs through a two-night stand September 18th and 19th at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Pick up tickets here.
