Iggor Cavalera (ex-Sepultura) and Shane Embury (Napalm Death) have teamed up for a new split release, Neon Gods / Own Your Darkness, featuring an extended track from each musician.
The two-song split is set to drop March 21st via Cold Spring and is now streaming in full via Bandcamp.
Iggor’s contribution, “Neon Gods,” comes first. Clocking in at nearly 20-minutes in length, the instrumental piece sees the founding Sepultura drummer exploring experimental territory, shifting between dark ambient, harsh noise, drone, and industrial.
“‘Neon Gods’ is a bit of a sonic trip, with different layers of atmospheric vibrations, from darkness to light,” Iggor said via a press release. “It’s an absolute pleasure to do this split release with Shane; I believe we share a lot of similar ideas when it comes to opening our mind to different styles of sounds.”
Meanwhile, Embury explores similar sounds on the 13-plus-minute “Own Your Darkness,” creating a cavernous drone built from textures of noise and feedback.
“Iggor and I have been good friends for decades and this is a record very different for us both but amazing!” Embury enthused. “A very interesting track to make, it was my first experiment with the Solar 42 — an excellent synth for those eternal drones of despair — and I was assisted by my longtime colleague, Russ Russell. As I journey ever onward in through my individuation it’s imperative that I own my own darkness… hence the title. We all need to strive for balance and to kindle a light in the darkness of being.”
The split will officially be released while Iggor is on tour with his brother Max via their eponymous Cavalera project, in which they perform early-era Sepultura material. The tour runs through late March, and you can get tickets here.
