Flavor Flav has already demonstrated a noted interest in sea-faring creatures, based on his public adoration of the seafood chain Red Lobster (which he’s vowed to save from bankruptcy). But he’s also keen on supporting sea-faring humans, too — after pledging to support the US women’s water polo team ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the Public Enemy rapper has confirmed he’ll be sending each member of the team $1,000 and a trip on a Virgin Voyage cruise ship after the conclusion of the games.
Flav revealed his plan while on CBS Mornings with hosts Nate Burleson and Gayle King as well as US women’s water polo team captain Maggie Steffens. The rather unlikely partnership arose back in May, when Steffens posted on Instagram that despite being at the top of their game in the country, “most Olympians need a 2nd (or 3rd) job to support chasing the dream,” herself included. Flavor Flav then pledged his support to the team, vowing to be their hype man and extending financial and social media support throughout their Olympic campaign.
In their first interview together, Flav commended Steffens for her and her team’s determination and drive — even if he had never really known much about water polo before seeing Steffens’ post. While Steffens admitted to being “surprised” when she initially learned of Flav’s support, she called the partnership “beautiful,” saying, “he’s really opened up a lot of doors and truly been a hype man for us. It’s been amazing.” The US women’s water polo team are currently in search of a fourth consecutive gold medal, and Flav guarantees that he’ll “be there at the opening games and cheer[ing] them on.”
Meanwhile, Flavor Flav did discuss his affinity for the restaurant Red Lobster — recently, he ordered the entire menu (more than once), met with Red Lobster executives, and starred in one of their commercials. “I’ve always loved Red Lobster, since 1987-88 I’ve been taking my family to Red Lobster,” Flav said to Burleson and King, “… We gotta save the biscuits!”
