Toronto-based artist Eliza Niemi has shared ‘Melodies Like Mark,’ the latest single from her upcoming album Progress Bakery, set for release on March 21 via Tin Angel Records.

Built around a melody first played on a Casio CA-100, ‘Melodies Like Mark’ layers Niemi’s cello atop an initially present but later removed preset groove. The result is a track that feels both structured and free-flowing, mirroring the themes of spontaneity and preservation that inspired its creation. Niemi employs unconventional cello techniques to create a seasick, chaotic atmosphere, reinforcing the song’s sense of tension between movement and stasis.

Niemi says:

“My friend Mark told me once that he writes songs while he’s driving and records them on a little cassette player attached to the dash. This really stuck with me. It made me think about the concept of recording an idea vs. letting it float away, which in turn got me thinking about a series of tensions: movement vs. stasis, improvisation vs. orchestration, cassette player vs. phone, work of art vs. commodity, leather vs. pleather, possessing something vs. setting it free.”

With its offbeat charm and exploratory sound, ‘Melodies Like Mark’ captures Niemi’s knack for blending humor and depth.
