Deftones frontman Chino Moreno joined Smashing Pumpkins onstage during the latter’s show at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night (September 25th).
Moreno lent his vocals to the song “Jellybelly” from 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and the heavy groover was right in the singer’s wheelhouse.
As the band launched into the opening riffs, Chino pumped himself up by running back and forth across the stage while Billy Corgan took a step back to let his guest take lead vocals.
It takes a couple lines of the first verse before Chino hits his peak — he might have come in from the side-stage without a proper warmup — but he nailed the melody before too long, sounding perfect in Corgan’s register. One can easily imagine Deftones covering the track.
Corgan eventually joined in on vocals as the band steered the song to its breakdown finale, prompting an ecstatic Moreno to let out one of his signature screams before the final chord.
Smashing Pumpkins have been on the road supporting Green Day’s “Saviors” tour since late July. A final date remains: Saturday (September 28th) at Petco Park in San Diego. Find last-minute tickets here.
Meanwhile, Chino Moreno and Deftones are set to embark on a North American tour early next year, with dates kicking off on February 25th in Portland (get tickets here).
