Patti Smith was reportedly hospitalized for a “sudden illness” while on tour in Italy, forcing her to cancel her performance at Bologna’s Duse Theatre Tuesday night (December 12th). According to the Italian news outlet TG Com 24, the 76-year-old artist has since been discharged, but has cancelled two additional events this week as she recovers.
“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that Patti Smith’s concert will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” Duse Theatre representatives wrote in a statement (translated into English). “We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist.”
Additionally, TG Com 24 reports that Smith’s Venice concert on December 14th has also been cancelled, along with a signing the following day at Rizzoli Bookshop in Milan. She has been active on social media, sharing an Instagram story condemning restrictive abortion laws in Texas.
Back in August, Smith and her band opened for The National at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
Consequence has reached out to Smith’s representatives for more information, including an update on her condition.
