Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Merpire has unveiled her latest single, ‘Bigger,’ offering a thrilling glimpse into her forthcoming second album, Milk Pool, set for release on July 4th.
‘Bigger’ captures the heady anticipation of a first kiss, channeling both the excitement and the naïve sense of transformation that follows. Co-produced with London-based producer James Dring (Nilüfer Yanya, Genesis Owusu, Porches), the track fuses nostalgic indie sensibilities with a surf-rock-infused chorus, culminating in an explosive finale of guitar and synths. With a tight three-minute runtime, ‘Bigger’ balances tension and release, exemplified by a standout middle-eight section that Merpire wrote on a London double-decker bus en route to a session with Dring.
Speaking on the collaboration, Merpire shared:
“I was mesmerised watching [Dring] find and manipulate sounds to add to the song. One of those moments where I felt I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I gave him complete freedom to do whatever he wanted production-wise with the 3 stems I gave him – my vocal, the guitar chords, and the main guitar riff, then we went to his studio to finish off the vocals. I was in love with the first thing he sent back. He nailed the dark, sexy, sinister mood. I couldn’t be happier with the result.”
As the second single from Milk Pool, ‘Bigger’ follows the Valentine’s Day release of ‘Premonition,’ marking Merpire’s return after a four-year hiatus. The album itself is described as a dark-pop exploration of change, desire, and self-discovery, blending unconventional rhythms with moody synths and evocative storytelling.
With the release of Milk Pool on the horizon, Merpire continues to carve out her unique space in the indie-pop landscape, delivering music that is as intimate as it is expansive.
