Happy Gilmore and Modern Family actress Julie Bowen recently expressed surprise that she was asked to return for the upcoming Netflix sequel. Happy Gilmore 2 hits Netflix on Friday, July 25.
In the original Happy Gilmore, Julie Bowen starred as Virginia Venit, a golf tour public relations director who becomes Happy’s romantic interest.
During a recent interview on the Inside of You podcast, Bowen said she did not expect to be asked to return for the sequel (which is surprising considering her post-Happy Gilmore career saw her become one of the biggest TV actresses in the world on Modern Family).
“I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” Bowen said. “I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’”
“I read and they were relieved,” Bowen added of adutioning for the first film. “They were visibly relieved. I go, ‘What’s going on?’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.’ And I was like, ‘That’s a bad thing?’”
Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel to the beloved Adam Sandler-starring golf comedy Happy Gilmore that was released in 1996, will be hitting Netflix this month.
Sandler, of course, returns as the hard-swinging Happy Gilmore alongside fellow returning stars Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, Allen Covert, and Dennis Dugan.
Alongside the returning cast members from the original, Happy Gilmore 2 will also feature Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Blake Clark, and Nick Swardson, and celebrities/athletes such as Bad Bunny, Kid Cudi, Travis Kelce, Eminem, John Daly, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and more.
