22 Movies Whose ‘Strong Women’ Actually Rule

At some point in the last half-century, filmmakers realized women could be more than just sexy plot points. That’s nice, but in their haste to make up for misogynist time, they went too far in the opposite direction. The result was the “strong female character,” who was often just a man whose name was find-and-replaced with a lady name in the script. In their guilt for making women so powerless in the past, these characters sometimes had no weaknesses, which is just as dehumanizing as being a busty set decoration.

The consequence of all these shenanigans that could’ve been avoided by simply hiring a woman is that it’s hard to find movies that portray the better-moisturized gender as real, thinking, feeling people who also kick tons of ass. That’s why Redditor carlories recently asked r/AskReddit, “What movie did the ‘strong female’ trope right?” and Reddit shouted out the competent, the confident and the two teenage girls who stepped up for their families (weirdly, it was Jennifer Lawrence both times).
