Here’s a piece of scene trivia we never knew – State Champs once sang backing vocals on a song by 5 Seconds Of Summer.
As the band revealed on social media this weekend (March 08), the Champs boys can be heard performing during the chorus of the song ‘Lost In Reality’. The track originally appeared on 5SOS’ ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ EP and was later included on the Japanese edition of sophomore album ‘Sounds Good Feels Good’. Sum 41‘s Deryck Whibley is among the cowriters and it was produced by John Feldmann.
According to State Champs’ guitarist Tyler Szalkowski, they jumped in to do the backing vocals while they were in the studio making their album ‘Around The World And Back’.

The two bands would later tour together across Oceania on the ‘Rock Out With Your Socks Out’ tour. As Champs looked back on those days, they said “we had one record out and just came out on stage and played 25 minutes of a bunch of punk shit for 20K young kids that had never heard of us. No in ear monitors in an arena either, just stage wedges, had no idea what we were doing…I remember them posting the music video for ‘Elevated’ randomly on Twitter one day and I woke up with like 10k new followers and had no idea what the hell just happened.”

State Champs are among the bands on the lineup for Warped Tour this summer, performing at all three weekends in Washington D.C., Long Beach and Orlando. You can also catch them at Louder Than Life and Aftershock festivals later this year.
