Morrissey announces he’s “dissociated” with Capitol Records as Miley Cyrus asks to be removed from his finished but postponed album.
In a pair of messages posted to Morrissey’s website on December 23 and 24, the polarizing singer announced that he’d split with his label, Capitol Records, before releasing any music with them. Additionally, the former Smiths frontman says that Miley Cyrus had asked to be removed from his finished album, which has been postponed.
A post on his site entitled “Miley is a Punk Rocker” features a photo of Morrissey posing with Cyrus behind him in the studio. The caption reads, “Miley Cyrus now wants to be taken off the song ‘I Am Veronica’ for which she volunteered backing vocals almost two years ago. This comes at a time when Morrissey has disassociated (sic) himself with Capitol Records (Los Angeles), who control the hidden album Bonfire of Teenagers.”
A post entitled “Roll On 2023” appeared the day before, stating, “Morrissey has voluntarily parted company with Maverick/Quest management. Morrissey has also voluntarily withdrawn from any association with Capitol Records (Los Angeles).”
On Christmas Day, Morrissey posted a decidedly more positive message with the lyrics: “And all the things that I have seen qualify me for a part in your dreams.” He also included the video released three years ago for his cover of Melanie’s “Some Say I Got Devil.”
Last month, Morrissey announced that his album, Bonfire of Teenagers, initially slated for a February 2023 release, was no longer on the schedule, adding, “Its fate is exclusively in the hands of Capitol Records (Los Angeles).”
In early November, Morrissey walked off stage at LA’s Greek Theatre less than half an hour into his set with no explanation, much to the ire of his confused audience. That said, Morrissey has been alienating fans and colleagues alike for decades.
“I’m only attacked by people who don’t have the emotional ability to ignore me,” Morrissey once said of his uncanny ability to make waves in the press with questionable statements. “It’s against the law to be intelligent! The dumb have inherited the earth.”
