Brooklyn's THICK Talk Mental Health in the Music Industry

Last month, Consequence teamed up with the Sound Mind Center in Brooklyn to host the first-ever CoSigns Sessions. The intimate event saw local bands THICK and BODEGA performing stripped-down sets and sitting down with a Sound Mind professional for an open discussion about mental health. Now, we want everyone to share in the insights these artists shared during the panel by presenting CoSigns Sessions Fireside Chat: THICK.

The pop punk quartet are a perfect fit for the event, as singer/guitarist Nikki Sisti is herself a therapist when she’s not rocking out. “It’s hard out there for clinicians and healers, anything. So it’s always good to find other peer groups just to like, not learn, but just to like talk shit,” Sisti says. “That’s what you need. I don’t wanna learn how to do better. I just wanna be mad — be mad at the world, be mad at clients, be mad at mental health, the music industry, and all of that stuff. It’s nice having a space to vent without solutions sometimes.”

She and bandmates Kate Black, Rosie Slater, and Gillian Visco talk with Sound Mind’s Mike Rublin about self-care habits for staying grounded on tour, and balancing doomscrolling with the need to be an active band on social media. “I feel like taking breaks is really important,” says Black. “It’s sad ’cause [our song] ‘Bumming Me Out’ was written in a similar era, but it feels even more overwhelming now. So we’ve been talking about maybe doing a ‘Bumming 2.0,’ but it’s so much assault of just information on social media where you’re not in a place to say, ‘Hey, I’m willing to sit here and accept this information. I want to read this news article. I wanna understand the context of what’s going on.’ It’s like all these random snippets, and I think the only way to do it is to take breaks.”

The band even shares some accounts to follow so your feed isn’t all gloom and doom, specifically calling out Tanks Good News and Pasta Grannies. For those seeking support and balance in a demanding world, Sisti points to resources like music industry organization Backline and her own Ridgewood, Queens community collective Get Right Wellness.
